Lev 4

The next morning Lev and Kolya went to a building where it is believed that a old man and his chickens live. When they got there they knocked on the door and no one answered so Kolya decided they should wait. That morning was not a very good morning for Lev. Kolya asked him what was wrong, Lev told him it was nothing but Kolya knew it was something. He asked him if he was thinking about the Kirov, which had fallen days before when it was hit by a bomb. He said that he was, so Kolya told him a story about one of his Lieutenants and a boy who was upset about a letter he had received, the Lieutenant basically told the boy that he had a few minutes to cry and that after those few minutes he had to stop crying. This story made Lev a bit more angry. At this point Kolya knew that the Kirov was not the reason his friend was upset, so he asked again. That's when he realized that Lev was upset about the previous night. The reason Kolya and Sonya did not sleep with everyone else is because they went to the bedroom to make love. While Lev was listening to them he heard Kolya saying something to Sonya and he wanted to know what it was, so he asked. When Kolya head his question he told him that he told her the "usual stuff." Lev had no clue what the "usual stuff" was, so Kolya guessed that he was asking what to say because he's nervous and he was curious because he had never made love to anyone before, he told him everything he knew about making love.

Lev 3

The last time we saw Lev and Kolya, they were walking with a man to his apartment, where he claims to keep eggs. Now that they're at the man's apartment building Lev is hesitant about going in. Kolya eventually convinces Lev to go in. They get upstairs the man's apartment. When inside Lev immediately sees a tarp hanging from the ceiling dividing the room, through a open space in the tarp he can see body parts hanging from chains. He tried to warn Kolya, that's when the man and his wife attacked.  Lev tried to fight him off, when he got loose Kolya told him to run so he did. Half way down he felt bad so he stopped. He stood on the stairs listening to the noise coming from the apartment, the next thing he knew Kolya was dragging him down the stairs. After escaping the cannibals they needed some where to stay for the night, that's when Kolya remembered he had a friend that lived nearby. They decided to go to her house.When they got there Kolya introduced his friend, Sonya, to Lev. She let them in and introduced them to her friends, who were doctors at the local hospital. They all the fire sat around drinking weak tea. They slept huddled together to keep warm, except for Sonya and Kolya, they went to the bedroom to be alone. That night was awkward for Lev, sleeping close to people he'd just met but had gotten over it as the warmth kicked in. That night Lev slept well.

Lev 2

Now that Lev and Kolya have gotten their task and a little money, they were ready for their journey. They started their search at the Haymarket. They went booth to booth asking if anyone had eggs. After walking around, getting closer to the last booths, Lev and Kolya got to a booth where a man was selling unlabeled bottles of clear liquor. Kolya asked the man what it was he said it was Vodka made from wood. Kolya told him that it wasn't vodka that it was "wood alcohol."Kolya decided to buy it, only if the booth keeper would drink some too. They both drank some of the "wood alcohol." When Kolya was done with his cup he pretended to choke like he had just drank poison. When he was done acting, the booth keeper asked for his money, thats when Kolya told Lev to pay the man. At this point Lev was confused and a bit frustrated. When they eventually left the booth of liquor, they went to a booth ran by a young boy. Kolya asked him what he was selling the boy told him library candy, the glue from the binding of books. While Kolya started a conversation with the boy Lev decided to walk around the hay market to try to find eggs. As Lev was walking around a talk, husky man walked up to him and said he had heard that he was looking for eggs and that he had some at his apartment. Lev got Kolya and they followed the man to his apartment.

The Crosses

Lev 1

In the City of Thieves everything is in Lev's point of view, everything he sees we see. Lev Beniov is a 17 year old boy living in Piter, Russia during World War II. At the beginning of the war Lev had no one but his neighbors to keep him company. His father was killed by soldiers years before for being a poet, all poets, authors, and teachers were pt to death because it was believed that they had great influence on many people. Lev's mother and sister left the city as the war was beginning. They wanted him to come with them, but he refused because the wanted to serve his country to prove he was a man. At this time Lev was not old enough to become a soldier, you needed to be 18, so he acted as a firefighter for his apartment block. One night while on duty Lev and his friends spotted a fallen German soldier and decided to see if he was still alive. When they discovered that he wasn't they took his weapons and alcohol. They all sat around the dead body while they passed around the bottle of cognac, as they were enjoying their beverage the GAZ showed up. Lev was arrested when he was trying to save his friend and secret crush Vera. He was put into a jailhouse called the crosses, which was described as dark, empty, and quiet. While there he met another boy, who was there for robbing someone, named Kolya. After a couple of days in jail the colonel chose them for a very important task, to find eggs for his daughter's wedding cake.
